Focus vs. concentration: What is the difference?

One of the first steps to improving your attention is understanding the difference between focus vs. concentration.

People often use both terms interchangeably, but they refer to different parts of your attention.

Let’s take a closer look.

  • Focus is about intention and prioritizing small and large goals. It's where you choose to concentrate.

  • Concentration is what you do with your intention. It's how you filter stuff out and chose a single point to put your attention.

For example to focus on your career, you’ll have to concentrate heavily on work tasks, ignoring distractions throughout the day.

Balancing focus and concentration

Mastering your attention is about balancing focus and concentration.

True concentration requires time and energy. That’s why you need to be mindful about where you put your focus.

Everyone will have different priorities in life but here are some tips that everyone can benefit from:

⏱ Set a timer - just the process of deciding how long a task will take can help you concentrate on using that time wisely.

☝️ Focus on one task at a time - Multi-tasking is a myth. Even if you think you’re succeeding, your mind is actually shifting your concentration which just wastes time and energy.

🛌🏻 Take care of your body - getting enough sleep and exercise will help boost your energy, motivation, and concentration ability.

As you think about the differences between focus vs. concentration take the time to think about your priorities, and how you spend your time.

Remember that whenever you're saying yes to something, you're also saying no to something else.

Chose wisely.
